How innovation and fragmentation are changing the game for e-commerce
Online spending in emerging markets is growing 1.8x faster than global middle-class spending, but the rails are uneven, and the checkout bar sits far above where most new consumers live. World Data Lab and EBANX unpack what the next ten years of payments data means for anyone selling online.

741M
new online buyers in emerging markets, 92% of them middle class
2.6bn

What we'll cover
The next billion buyers are already here. Most checkouts can't reach them.
Where the money moves
A third of all new consumer spending to 2036 is online, and 60% of that sits in emerging markets. Retail carries half the growth; gaming grows fastest at 14% a year.
The fragmentation problem
Every payment method has its own bar: half of emerging-market adults only have a debit card once they spend $14 a day, digital payments $20, online buying $32. One checkout stack rarely fits a whole market.
Lowering the bar
You can wait ten years for incomes to rise, or move the checkout bar from $25 to $6 and reach consumers who already exist, 60% of them already pay digitally.
Which markets, in what order
Ready or growing, almost never both. Where readiness and growth actually overlap, and why India in 2036 behaves like five separate markets in one.
