The polarized mindsets reshaping global consumption.
Consumers are no longer fixed segments defined by age or income. They're making fluid, situational decisions about what deserves a premium, what should cost less, and what no longer belongs in the basket. See how brands can earn the upgrade, win the value choice, or avoid being lost in the middle.
Affluent consumers will drive most of the value growth through 2036, while population growth among core consumers creates the greater runway for volume.

Consumers move fluidly between two mindsets: upgrading when a product earns its place, and trading down when it doesn't. Income sets the backdrop, but category, occasion, and perceived value decide the outcome.
Willing to pay more when trust, relevance, performance, or convenience earns the premium, and quick to trade back down when it doesn't.
Not a lowest-price mindset. Sharper trade-offs. They'll sacrifice preferences when price decides, but still trade up selectively when the value equation is easy to defend.
Growth is concentrating at the poles: a barbell-shaped market where consumers reward products that earn the upgrade, or shift to options that are "good enough" on value. Products caught in between are the most exposed.

Upgrade and value behaviors show up in every generation, but what triggers them, and where, differs vastly.
High medical and replenishment spend. Trade up for health and simplicity; trade down on Home Care basics and OTC generics.
Peak expenditure years, supporting multiple households. Spends when value is obvious; the largest affluent spending generation through 2036.
Digitally fluent and research-driven. Values and value are intertwined: they seek "defensible premium" backed by transparent claims.
The fastest-growing generation by spend, projected to overtake Boomer spending by 2029, a future growth engine for brands.
Projected change in middle-class population by 2036 (2025 = 100 baseline).
The West's share of global core consumers falls from 41% to 13% by 2036.
